Middle East, which is affected by the political changes in the last century mostly, on the one hand, has been trying to carry heritage from the empires of the previous century and on the other hand, has become the warm spot of the conflicts between Asia, Africa and Europe due to the fact that it is located in the junction point of these three continents. Therefore, it becomes an area that is interested by many social scientists, is focused by the experts of international relations and researchers of areas. Status quo designates that the area of Middle East will create new research areas for academicians, experts and journalists for quite a long time.

Turkey is preferred country for Middle Eastern Studies because of both its social structure and location in which different civilizations interact and its universities, institutions and corporations. Besides, the strong relations of Turkey with the countries of this area and interaction between countries in many fields give an opportunity to learn and experience area at the same time for academic researchers. The interdisciplinary approaches of the academicians in these programs are the foregrounding features of the Middle Eastern Studies in Turkey. In these programs, where the languages of the area such as Arabic and Persian are focused and on the other hand academicians from various disciplines work, it is provided for students to have education in a wide range from Middle East in global politics to Middle East city history, from energy and security in Middle East to minorities in the area. Middle Eastern Studies MA Program could be seen as the first step of academic career and it is also a serious opportunity for career in diplomacy and media.

PhD Program in Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East at Marmara University

Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East was established in 1992 at Institute of Middle Eastern Studies at Marmara University. Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East was established for Women in Middle East, Middle East sociology, Middle East A nthropology and media in Middle east.

PhD program includes courses relevant to sociological structure of Middle Eastern countries (Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Jordan) relations among these countries and regional languages (Arabic, Persian).

PhD Program in Political History and International Relations of the Middle East aims to bridge theory and practice in international relations and offers courses involving history, politics, economy, international relations, the Middle Eastern culture and societies.

After forming a broad perspective on the area with the courses, every student should develop an original study program for their research depending on student's academic and career plans.

In order to get perfection in the academic study, doctoral candidates are expected to learn one of the Middle Eastern languages. In the same way, the doctoral candidates must be speak and write fluently in the chosen language.

MA Program in Political History and International Relations of the Middle East at Marmara

MA Program in Political History and International Relations of the Middle East focuses on the modern era via several courses on history, politics, geo-politics, security and international relations. In order to attain an interdisciplinary perspective, students are taking courses on culture, religion, geography, anthropology and society in the Middle East. For further investigation, students could take elective language courses on the Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish).

MA and PhD Programs at the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies at Marmara University

The Institute for Middle Eastern Studies was established in 1992 at the Marmara University in İstanbul, Turkey. The Institute aims to enhance knowledge of the Middle Eastern and Islamic societies and cultures through cutting edge research and post-graduate education. The Institute offers a wide range of interdisciplinary MA and PhD courses to enable students and researchers interested in deepening their understanding of Middle Eastern history, politics, economics, social and cultural issues as well as contemporary challenges. The current programs at the Institute for Middle East Studies also addresses recent transformations in the region, foreign policy relations, ongoing conflicts and security challenges, economic and political integration. The Institute organizes conferences and seminars and welcomes students and researchers from other countries to foster academic and intellectual cooperation.

MA Program in Middle Eastern Studies at METU

The basic objective of the program is to educate the graduate students in issues regarding the Arab World, Turkey, Iran and North Africa, to train the researchers and area experts for both public and private sectors, universities, research centers, and archives and libraries, to conduct academic and scientific research, to organize conferences and to publish in the history and contemporary affairs of the region.

The program also aims at increasing the academic cooperation between research centers in the Middle East and METU, and developing the national and international dialogue among the scholars working in the field of study.

MA and PhD Programs in Middle Eastern Studies at Sakarya University

The recent shift in Turkish foreign policy has created new awakening toward the Middle East among academicians and intellectuals in Turkey. Despite the fact that number of institutes and programs throughout the country that focus on the Middle East is scarce. Nevertheless, new studies are urgently needed that analyze the region as politically, economically and culturally for introducing alternative to the Turkish foreign policy makers.

The studies conducted on the region are restricted only academic field, so research and researcher absence in practice is one of the problems in the Middle East studies. Hence, this master program was opened in 2011 for decreasing researcher necessity and increasing studies on the region. The Institute for Social Sciences of Sakarya University started the interdisciplinary program by gathering departments of International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, History, Economics, Finance and Theology.

The political developments and transformations that have started in 2011 especially manifest opening necessity of the program and beginning of the program in fall semester of 2012-2013 period gains more importance. The education in the program will be in Turkish, English, Arabic and German languages. Thus, the program aims to gather students from different cultures as well as conduct studies in four languages.
